Information Gathering

Having spent most of first year producing work without properly understanding where my inspiration was coming from, I want to now be more methodical about the way that I gather information, channeling what truly interests me into new work.
Something that has always been present in my work, but unexplained, is the concept of prayer- different ways of praying and devotion through a range of cultures interests me, partly just from a visual perspective, and partly from a conceptual perspective. I love the fact that in devotional artwork, the creator of the work becomes unimportant and often is not credit. The importance is placed of the object of devotion; a deity, god, goddess, or in the case of Mexican 'Milagros' charms, an ailing limb or organ that requires healing or protection. Often no expense is spared in the creation of this opulent work and the gaudy shrines and prayers display decadent use of materials, particularly in less well heeled countries where religion is more of a necessity and social norm.
